A Dim View of Human Ecology
by Greg Koos

I
It was hundreds of thousands of years ago
when we gained mastery over the earth

Hundreds of thousands of years ago we
shit in our own nest and
shit in our neighbors nest

we could take it
they couldn't

they used to be our neighbors
they moved on or died

II
tens of thousands of years ago
we ran simple grass eaters over cliffs

we ate a few parts of them
the rest turned to muck
after a while grass eaters became scarce

we could take it
they couldn't

they used to be our neighbors
they moved on or died

III
a few hundred years ago
the only life we knew
we ate

we ate our neighbors
and they ate each other

we could take it
they couldn't

they used to be our neighbors
they moved on or died

IV
today the circle of life
got really close
I eat you and you eat me

I can take it
you can't

you used to be my neighbor
move on dead man
