Working Woman
Georganne Rundblad

Challenging stereotypes of what is "appropriate" or what is taken for granted is what I attempt to do in the classes I teach and in my research. Photographing and interviewing women and men who work in sex nontraditional jobs is one way I hope to push the boundaries of possibilities, or open up potential opportunities, for the readers of my work. For example, with these photos of Lorelie Sims in Charleston, Illinois, I hope to challenge viewers' understandings of what a blacksmith is.

Georganne Rundblad is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Illinois Wesleyan University. She teaches courses in Sex and Gender, Race and Ethnic Relations, Social Stratification, and Work, among others. Her research focuses on women and men who work in sex nontraditional occupations. She lives in Normal with her husband, daughter, 15 birds and too many fish to count.
