INCIDENT AT PAC, Oct. '98
by Jack Collom

There's a tradition in Naropa's
Kerouac School of disembodied Poetics
of mentioning Negative Capability again and again.
At the recent Faculty Reading Jack Green was introducing

Bobbie and brought it up once more.
While he explained the evening walk,
epistolary setting and Shakespearean inspiration
one more time, a lone balloon

(I forget what color) bigger than his head
drifted in front of him, let loose
from God knows where.
It hovered there, tiny random motions

distracting our attention from Jack's
aesthetic clarifications. At last
Bobbie herself arose from the audience,
strode forward and, reaching irritably

for the string,
plucked it away.
