Some ideas for your
documentary. Greenville, Mississippi, a delta town with an illustrious
literary history and a before its time progressiveness: Walker Percy,
Shelby Foote, and Hodding Carter III (previous spokesperson for the
State Department). Foote is ancient but alive (famous Civil War historian------half
Jewish, his grandfather a plantation owner). Might be an interesting
vignette based on the commerce of the river.
The Battle of New
Orleans: good book by Robert Remini, slaves later freed joining, with
Jean LaFitte Pirates, ethnic varieties, and lead by that All American
Andrew Jackson-----this battle prefigures in many ways the spirit of
America.
There's always Mark
Twain and then Melville with The Confidence Man. I haven't read these
in many years but I suspect there's something there for you about the
Mississippi.
