A native of the Pacific Northwest, I've only been anywhere near the Mississippi once -- 10 years ago on a trip to Mardi Gras. Whenever I think about the river, I can't help but remember one of the most unforgettable things I've ever seen. I stood near a pier in New Orleans and watched a barge carrying motorhomes plow slowly through the water. Each motor home had its own little green square of astro-turf next to it.
