The Wire by Simone Ellis
THE WIRE
a long form story
on that old n'are-do-well
well of all sources to drink from
is it
not the most poisonous and tempting
to draw me into the lives
of those whose blood
runs red and hearts
pound out
the final hurrah of the
American Way
which is
don't kid yourself
every man for
himself
Navarez was the first to utter those
words beneath his patched one-eyed
wisdom
every man
for his self
that's the way they
say in Baltimore
the moment he was in American
waters
every man
for his
self
was what
leaked out
and those are
then and now
those gilded
famous
last words
but I've left you bleeding
still
there on the docks
on the corners
in silver SUV's
asking if my cornrows
look okay
and that is good for this day
in Montana where I breathe
fresh rainy air and
chalk you all off
to a great story told
never happened
never will happen
here
