If our world is composed of overlapping stimuli which create a constant condition of sensory overload, then why should art limit itself to one discipline or another? Is it not true that imagery is inseparable from sound and evolution in time? Why shouldn't art mirror an accurate reflection of our environment and our urban culture? Why shouldn't art, couldn't art be a combination of painting, sculpture, the written and spoken word, light, sound, movement and technology?
I built my first computerized dimming system programmed for infinite lighting combinations. This system was used in the creation of a multi-sensory environment where illusory two-dimensional images are indistinguishable from the three-dimensional painted, sculptural and found object elements in my work. The overlay of evolving colored lights and projections in unison with a sound system distorts the viewers perception of his or her surrounding physical space, thereby integrating all media into one indistinguishable statement.
Through the use of contemporary iconography, I enhance my statements by employing current cultural symbols as satirized metaphors that I can manipulate and incorporate into my art.
