Straight out of the weed wigwams of the Congo, this album is definitely
not for the tender-hearted lovers of elevator harmony. Forged in the early
80's, The Awful Art of the Bongoloids is awfully ahead of its time
in that it crosses cultures effortlessly in its search for a fresh, inimitable
sound. Tribal percussions are deftly intertwined with electronically twisted
guitars from outer space that draw nebulae of peculiar ambiences and slow-paced
tunes that are never quite ordinary or complete. Meanwhile, a score of
percussion and synthesizer surprises slap the ear and vanish into the
distance. There is a pattern to the Bongoloid madness, however, and the
more attentive listener would come to enjoy the heavy pounding theme that
usually builds up in a song. This is not music one can listen to while
assembling a miniature ship inside a glass bottle. It requires listening
from within, or else you can probably do without.
If we were to follow the old formula, The
Awful Art of the Bongoloids would have to be described as the Zulu
clashing with Space Invaders. Buy this album if you want to know who won.
