Last Night On the 40th Floor Balcony
by Karen Chase

Last Night On the 40th Floor Balcony,

2 little girls and I stood
joking.  Rivers on both sides,
the Statue of Liberty on the right.

The smaller wore an aqua shirt,
the larger, a red one.  I lifted the
larger up, put her down, thought,
in dreams you can do this, lifted
her again, threw her over the railing.

She flew down slowly, her length grew,
her width widened, her little body now
a puppet 3 stories high, legs billowing
out, aqua arms wings of a birdgirl.
She landed in a heap on the ground.
Then I heaved the other one over the railing.
